In a report dated Sept. 21, 1978, by the late A.F. Hayward, Town Historian for Essex, NY, on our Fortune/Younger families of Essex, after checking church and cemetery, he wrote the following:

 

“From an old cemetery just outside Essex called Briar Hill Cemetery:

 

After searching about 2/3rds of the area I came upon a row of Youngers.  The next stone in the row was only a badly crumbled part of a headstone, mostly in small soft pieces.  I assume it was probably the headstone of Archibald Younger .  It appeared to have been a matching stone of Robert Younger, next in line.  All I could get off these pieces of stone were

Next are the stones as they stand in line beyond the above.

 

            Robert Younger died Jan. 29, 1853 ae 29 yrs.  We shall meet again.

 

            Margaret Brown, wife of Archibald Younger, died Sept. 13, 1833.aged 45 yrs.

 

            Helen, dau of Archibald & Margaret Younger, died Oct. 2, 1842, aged 11 yrs.

 

            Jane Hall, wife of Archibald Younger, died Sept. 15. 1829 aged 67 yrs/

 

            Archibald J., son of Archibald & Margaret Younger, died July 25, 1827, aged 11         

            Yrs.

 

            In the same row about 15 feet away was a pile of broken stones, some of which were leaning up against a tree.  I found the last part of the name Fortune on one piece so I began layimg them out and fitting the remaining pieces together.  Here is what I got:

 

            Catherine Younger, wife of (missing) Fortune, died July 21, 1834. ae 52 yrs.

 

            John Fortune

                  Died

            Nov. 17, 1857

            Aged 85 yrs.”
